Participant goals and capabilities

The University of Virginia's Internship Placement Program (IPP) connects undergraduate students with tailored professional internships. This program is designed to build on students' academic knowledge and provide hands-on experience in a variety of professional settings.

Our approach ensures that students gain valuable work experience and develop crucial skills and insights into their career goals, interests, values, and talents. The program is overseen by the UVA Career Center and IPP faculty instructors, ensuring the quality of the internship experience.

Internship placements can be virtual, hybrid, or in-person (Charlottesville, VA). Interns are interested in research, archival, policy and legal projects.

All interns complete 10 hours per week over 15 weeks during their internship.

The UVA Internship Placement Program begins with intern recruitment, selection, and preliminary matching to ensure partners receive the best possible intern for consideration.

Private, public, non-profit, start-up, and community organizations across a diverse range of industries are represented in the IPP. Organizations must meet the following criteria to participate:

  • Provide a project that fits the time requirements: 10 hours/week for 15 weeks (January to April)
  • For in-person internships, offer interns a professional workspace that is not a home business location
  • Consist of a staff of at least three members (start-up founders are encouraged to apply if all other criteria can be met)
  • Appoint a supervisor to support the internship experience and fulfill program requirements
  • Develop an internship learning plan with intern at the beginning of the internship
  • Complete the IPP performance evaluation process
  • Adhere to internship guidelines and requirements as dictated by the Department of Labor Fair Labor Standards Act
  • Participate in Supervisor Orientation prior to the start of your first internship session

If your project meets the minimum requirements, a Riipen UVA Admin team member will be in touch to schedule a 30-minute screening call. Once your project is screened, you will be invited to meet with a member of the UVA IPP team and requested to complete the intake form before being matched to a student.

Project Examples

Requirements

Projects ideal for this experience should provide opportunities for students to apply and deepen their understanding of research, archival, policy and legal projects. The projects should challenge students to think critically, solve problems, and develop professional competencies in real-world settings.

Example Projects:

  1. Local Archival Research: Students research primary sources in local archives.
  2. Historical Policy Analysis: Students analyze the impact of historical legislation (e.g., civil rights acts) on communities.
  3. Oral Histories of Social Movements: Students collect and document oral histories from individuals involved in social movements to explore historical context and lasting policy impacts.
  4. Landmark Legal Case Study: Students research a landmark legal case, examining its historical context and tracing its influence on legal and social issues.
  5. Digital Preservation Project: Students digitize and catalog historical documents for a museum or archive.
  6. Social Media Strategy: Design a social media strategy to promote public interest in a specific historical or humanities-related topic, event, or figure.
  7. Nonprofit Fundraising Proposal: Create a fundraising proposal for a nonprofit historical or humanities initiative.

Additional organization criteria

Organizations must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this program:

How is this internship conducted?

When will the intern need to complete their 10 weekly internship hours?

Does this internship require US work authorization?

Are undergraduate international students on F-1 visas eligible for this internship?

Are the tools and technologies required for the internship available as free or open-source software?

I confirm that I have reviewed all the details on the experience page and understand the Riipen x IPP selection process.
